Washington State Ferries – Anacortes – Friday Harbor

The Washington State Ferry system is the lifeline of the San Juan Islands, offering reliable and scenic service year-round. It is the only way to bring a vehicle to the islands, with sailings departing from Anacortes. Vehicle reservations are recommended but not strictly required. Walk-on fares are affordable, and the ferry terminal in Friday Harbor is located right in the heart of town, just a short stroll from our shop. It is a classic and convenient way to arrive on the island.

Puget Sound Express – Port Townsend – Friday Harbor

Puget Sound Express offers fast and comfortable passenger ferry service between Port Townsend and Friday Harbor, making it easy to reach San Juan Island without a car. The ferry docks right in downtown Friday Harbor. With stunning views and a smooth ride, it’s a scenic and stress-free way to start your island adventure.

San Juan Cruises – Bellingham – Friday Harbor

San Juan Cruises offers scenic, full-day trips from the Bellingham Cruise Terminal to Friday Harbor, often including whale watching, onboard meals, and a three-hour stop to explore town. You’ll depart in the morning and return by early evening, skipping the driving and ferry lines. The boat departs from Fairhaven, and disembarks in downtown Friday Harbor. It’s a relaxed, car-free way to kick off your San Juan Island adventure.

By Air

Friday Harbor Seaplanes

Friday Harbor seaplanes offer scheduled and charter flights from Seattle-area airports directly to Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor. The journey—typically 35 to 50 minutes depending on departure point—takes place in classic floatplanes such as the six-seat De Havilland Beaver, providing panoramic views of Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains, and the San Juan Islands  .

You can also enjoy narrated scenic tours departing right from the Friday Harbor marina. These short 20-minute flights circle San Juan Island, highlighting landmarks like Mount Baker, Lime Kiln Point Lighthouse, and the surrounding islands—often with chances to spot whales or seals below  .

It’s an elegant and memorable way to arrive or explore the islands without the drive and ferry wait.

San Juan Airlines

San Juan Airlines offers regular flights between Bellingham and Friday Harbor Airport, making it easy to reach the island without a car. The airport is just a short walk from our bike shop, making for a smooth transition from air travel to two wheel perfect for car-free visitors coming from afar.

Staying on San Juan Island

Web Suites

Crystal Seas Kayaking is a locally owned sea kayaking adventure company based in Friday Harbor. Since 1994 they have offered guided three‑hour, full‑day, sunset and multi‑day tours along the rugged western shores of San Juan Island  . Tours are perfect for all levels and include options for wildlife watching, inn‑to‑inn camping, multi‑sport trips, and family outings  . On longer trips you’ll enjoy locally sourced gourmet meals, top‑rated gear, and knowledgeable naturalist guides who help you spot wildlife from whales to eagles  . Crystal Seas departs from private docks close to town and offers free transport for guests 

Outdoor Odysseys

Van Go’s Pizza

Van Go’s Pizza in Friday Harbor serves both classic and creative pies made with quality ingredients, along with craft beer, regional wines, and fresh salads. It’s a cozy local spot that stays open later than most and is popular with both visitors and locals. They often sell out of dough, so it’s best to go early if you can.

Tenth House

Tenth House is a charming and welcoming restaurant known for its high-quality ingredients and casual yet upscale atmosphere. Their stone-fired pizza is a favorite among both locals and visitors. On many evenings, you’ll find local musicians performing in their yard, adding to the relaxed, community vibe. Located very near the bicycle shop.

San Juan Island Brewing Co.

San Juan Island Brewing is near the bicycle shop (a possible factor in choosing our location) and is a great destination for casual dining. Bonus they brew they their own delicious beer. Enjoy dining inside or on their beautiful patio.

Nation Parks and other Public Land

American Camp

Located on the southern tip of San Juan Island, American Camp offers expansive coastal prairie, sweeping views of the Olympic Mountains, and a rich natural landscape teeming with wildlife. This historic site marks the U.S. Army’s presence during the peaceful 1859–1872 joint occupation known as the Pig War. Visitors can explore military history, hike scenic trails, and experience the island’s wild southern beauty.

English Camp

Set along the tranquil shores of Garrison Bay on the island’s north end, English Camp preserves the former British Royal Marines’ outpost from the same joint occupation era. The site features formal gardens, historic structures, forested trails, and shoreline access, blending cultural heritage with natural serenity. It’s a peaceful counterpart to American Camp, offering a different perspective on a remarkable chapter in U.S.–British diplomacy.

Lime Kiln

Perched on the rocky western shore of San Juan Island, Lime Kiln Point State Park is one of the best land-based whale-watching spots in the world. The iconic lighthouse, built in 1919, stands watch over Haro Strait, where orcas, humpbacks, and other marine life often pass close to shore. In addition to wildlife viewing, the park offers scenic trails, picnic areas, and interpretive displays highlighting the island’s natural and cultural history.

 Set just a short ride from town amid rolling farmland, San Juan Vineyards offers a peaceful escape and a taste of island-grown wines. Housed in a beautifully restored 1890s schoolhouse, the tasting room invites you to sample estate varietals and regional blends in a relaxed, scenic setting. It’s an ideal stop for a leisurely afternoon outing—especially by bike.

Wescott Bay Shellfish

Westcott Bay Shellfish Co. is one of the few small, family-run aquaculture farms in the San Juan Islands. The soul of Westcott Bay is a philosophy of community and environmental stewardship, and a respect for its unique natural and cultural history. We invite you to come and enjoy our laid-back, friendly atmosphere and experience life on a working aquaculture farm.

Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm

Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm is a scenic working farm on 40 to 60 acres on the west side of San Juan Island. Home to the largest herd of alpacas in the islands, the farm offers self‑guided walks among these gentle, fluffy animals and sweeping pasture views  . The on‑site country store features a curated selection of alpaca clothing, yarn, accessories, and cuddly toys—all made from soft, eco‑friendly fiber grown right on the farm  .

Traveling Inter Island

The interisland ferry connects San Juan, Orcas, Lopez, and Shaw Islands. It’s a simple and scenic way to explore the islands, whether you’re walking on or bringing a vehicle.

Without a vehicle

Walk-on passengers ride free between the islands. No ticket or reservation is needed. Just arrive at the terminal a little early, walk aboard, and enjoy the ride. Bicycles are also free on interisland routes.

With a vehicle

Drivers only pay when traveling westbound, meaning you are only charged when returning to San Juan Island with your car. There are no reservations for interisland sailings, so it is first-come, first-served. Arrive early, especially during peak travel times, as space is limited.

Tips

Check the current schedule using the WSDOT app or website. Sailing times vary by season and day of the week. Interisland travel is generally easy and low-stress, but planning ahead can help you avoid long waits.
